Steelhead named "JACK" Recently, I've been enjoying the 2023 steelhead fishing season up on the tributaries of Lake Erie. When the water level conditions are right and the fish are biting, we have a blast pulling in some amazing fish. Sometimes, a little guy called a "jack" sneaks in. They are usually a little smaller than the normal steelhead, but still seem to fight hard like the regular sized fish! When I started writing the story Salmon Survivor, my main character was named Max, after a favorite uncle of mine who loves to fish. When researching Alaskan salmon for the book, I found that they also have a variety of jacks within the five types of Pacific Salmon. These jacks leave for the ocean, and then come back a little early to their home waters to spawn. They will battle with the larger species to get to the nests and be part of the mating process. As they are considered "immature," I thought it was fitting that my thirteen-year-old main character traveling to Alaska should be named "Jack." He actually finds out later in the story about "Jack Salmon" as well and realizes how green he is in Alaska. Hence, Jack became the main character. Comments are closed.
